ARTIST'S
STATEMENT
I need to paint like I need to breathe, and I've known it ever since I was a small child. My painting is done entirely on an intuitive level, especially the color selection. I visualize the outcome for days, weeks, sometimes even months before I actually start the physical act of painting. But I never really know how the images will turn out until they are finished. Often I stand back, look at the picture and wonder to myself "Did I paint that?" My fingers are my most useful tools. Painting with them makes me feel close to the painting, more connected, like I have more control of the outcome. Neutral colours are not a part of my visual dictionary. I prefer bright, happy colours that scream, "See me and be happy." I am constantly inspired to paint my wonderful everyday life. I have created an amazing garden on the five acres where I live with my very loving and supportive partner, my four St. Bernards, two cats and one border collie. I live in paradise on earth, eating from my own vegetable gardens, wandering through my flower gardens, through the forests and on the beach. I take trips abroad for inspiration. My life is like a puzzle, and all the pieces match up perfectly to create a beautiful picture. In addition to original paintings on canvas and paper, I produce cards and small prints of my work, and larger giclees that have been shown and sold at The Bay in downtown Vancouver. These can be purchased through my website. My flower images have been reproduced as postage stamps for the Marshall Islands, and are currently being produced as limited edition silk scarves. I exhibit regularly at Final Touch Frames in Vancouver, as well as Old Tyme Builders in North Vancouver. My work can also be found at the Dundarave Fish Market, West Vancouver and Cafe Il Nido, Vancouver. If you are interested in a special commission of your home, garden, a beautiful bouquet of flowers you'd like to remember, or an image from your travels or a landscape you love, please do not hesitate to contact me. Creating a special piece for someone and watching their eyes light up when they first see a painting created especially for them is part of the joy of being an artist. Gigi Hoeller, 2009 |
